IT HAS been five decades since Bundy R. Bear was "born" from a moment of ingenious thinking by shareholder Sam McMahon.
To mark the occasion, the Bundaberg Distilling Company is throwing a birthday bash on November 13, where two limited edition Bundy R. Bear 50th Birthday collectors' bottles will also be launched.
People can go on a journey from 1961 through to today, reliving the company's milestones and highlights from the bear's life.
Sam McMahon's son, Brett, will officially open the day and the significant occasion will also be used to reveal a special project aimed at immortalising the bear.
Bundaberg Rum brand manager Duncan Littler said Bundy R. Bear's 50th birthday was an historic event, as the bear formed a proud part of the brand's heritage.
"Fifty years ago, Sam McMahon introduced a polar bear to suggest to the cooler southern states that rum could ward off the wickedest of winter chills, but little did he know Bundy R. Bear would become the national Australian legend he is today," he said.
