Champions in Kroos control after big win

BAYERN Munich has taken a big step in defending its Champions League title with a 2-0 first-leg win over Arsenal in their round-of-16 clash at the Emirates Stadium.

It was a case of deja vu for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who watched his team go out at the same stage last season to the Germans.

Bayern has now lost only once in 36 matches in all competitions and will be clear favourite to make the quarter-finals.

It was a controversial success, with Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny sent off for a challenge on Arjen Robben (pictured).

Although the resulting penalty was missed by David Alaba, it changed the course of the game after Mezut Ozil had earlier missed from the spot for the home team.

The visitors took advantage of the extra man with Toni Kroos curling in the opener after the break and Thomas Muller adding the second late on.

In yesterday's other tie, Atletico Madrid won 1-0 in the first leg against AC Milan at the San Siro.
