MELBOURNE'S Chet Faker has taken out this year's Triple J Hottest 100 with his song Talk Is Cheap.

The Melbourne electronic producer and songwriter, real name Nick Murphy, topped the youth broadcaster's annual listener poll with his chart-topping song Talk Is Cheap.

The Hottest 100 received more than two million votes, the most in the poll's 26-year history.

Murphy won five ARIA Awards last year for Built on Glass, the debut album off which Talk Is Cheap was released.

Peking Duk's High, which was widely tipped to take out this year's top spot, came in at No 2 and was one of two Top 10 songs for the Canberra electro duo (Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles).

"It's been crazy; we just started out doing club shows… it's been a blur," the duo told Triple J's Matt Okine and Alex Dyson from their own Australia Day party in Portsea, Victoria.

Voting for this year's poll was overshadowed by the #Tay4Hottest100 campaign, which would have seen Taylor Swift's Shake It Off come in at No 12 if the song hadn't been disqualified.

The broadcaster released an official statement before the countdown began this morning with eight "hilarious but totally true" reasons why votes for the pop star couldn't be counted.

Mark Ronson's funk hit Uptown Funk, which has received a lot of airtime on commercial radio, came in at No 6.

Adelaide's hip-hoppers Hilltop Hoods ranked higher than expected with their party track Cosby Sweater.
