FORMER Toowoomba girl Leesa Wockner wasn't expecting the twist in the ending of long-time boyfriend Chris Currie's latest novel.

The unusual conclusion was in fact a marriage proposal.

The Brisbane author and former Warwick boy wrote his latest book The Ottoman Motel as a mystery novel, but it quickly turned into a romance for his girlfriend of more than two years.

“We were drinking champagne on a hotel rooftop for my birthday dinner when Chris gave me a copy of his new book to read,” Miss Wockner said.

“I thought that was exciting enough, but then he told me to turn to the last page.”

It was there the former St Ursula's College student read the ending that took her breath away.

In the acknowledgments section, it read, “To my favourite, to the reason I live my life, Leesa Wockner, who, if she reads this, I hope will agree to marry me, despite the number of commas in this sentence.”

Miss Wockner, obviously not one to let punctuation get in the way of love, said yes without hesitation.

“I thought the proposal was very much like Chris — very creative and romantic,” she said.

It was Mr Currie's love for writing that led him to find Miss Wockner in the first place.

The two met at a literary journal launch party in Brisbane more than two years ago.

Miss Wockner was quick to dismiss any claims that the proposal was a publicity stunt.

“If you knew us at all, you'd know it's for real,” she said.

“I love surprises and that night was just one surprise after another. He's a real romantic at heart.”
