Christensen continues campaign for welfare drug testing

PEOPLE who are on dole payments may have to undergo compulsory drug testing if Member for Dawson George Christensen's idea becomes a reality.

Mr Christensen first started pushing the idea of drug tests for welfare payment recipients about two years ago and is pleased the Federal Government may now be considering it.

He said mine workers underwent drug testing regularly, and was part of the job.

"If it's good enough for the mine worker... it should be good enough for the person receiving unemployment benefits," he said.

"Taxpayers shouldn't be paying for other people's drug habits."

New Zealand have a system where welfare recipients are tested and if they fail, or refuse to submit, they have 30 days to get clean.

If they fail again, then they have to repay the payments.

Do you think people on welfare payments should undergo drug testing?
