Ciriello takes Aussies to world glory in Belgium
VICTORIA'S Chris Ciriello has made a habit of saving his best for big games, and he did it again in the final of the World League semi-finals in Belgium.
Booed every time he touched the ball after being sin-binned in the second period following a verbal altercation with home player Tanguy Cosyns, Ciriello (pictured) converted a penalty corner two seconds before full-time to give the Kookaburras a dramatic 1-0 victory.
It was the fourth time in little more than a year the 29-year-old's goals have been crucial in a major final, following his hat-tricks in the grand finals of the World Cup and Commonwealth Games, and four goals in the 2014 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup final.
The tournament was also a triumph for teenager Blake Govers. The 19-year-old was named best junior player after finishing as the leading scorer with seven goals.
