Entire community mourns as 'little angel' loses cancer fight

IT IS with the heaviest of hearts the Mackay community faces the heartbreaking news of the loss of one of our youngest and bravest souls.

Mia McEldowney, 8, has succumbed to the cancer that began as a slow growing mass in her brain.

During the final days of January, she had struggled with respiratory issues.

In a post on the Miracles for Mia Facebook page, started by Mia's devoted parents Ana and Chris, on January 31, Mia had struggled to breathe on her own three times and nurses said it was a signal of the end.

A following post on the page made this morning confirmed Mia died last night at 8pm on Saturday, February 1.

"She was surrounded by light, love and her adoring family, right up until her last breath," the social media post read.

"Your heart was too big for this small world my baby girl. You put up such a fight, all the way through. You can now rest easy."

On July 21 last year, the Mia was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The location of the tumour, on her brain stem, meant an operation was not a possibility.

At the time, doctors had told the McEldowneys Mia's condition was incurable but her parents never lost hope, staying positive and attempting to prolong their precious daughter's life for as long as they possibly could.

On January 14, Mrs McEldowney told the Daily Mercury that despite several harrowing months Mia had great joy at the arrival of her baby brother last year.

During the same conversation, Mrs McEldowney said the support they had received from the Mackay community had been 'crazy' and had allowed the family to remain financially afloat while they spent as much time together as possible.

"We wanted to do a big thank you for everyone, I know there are lots of people who watch the page, but there's no way we could thank everyone."

Mrs McEldowney said the family knew Mia had touched so many lives.

"We are devastated, but we will celebrate our little angel."
