Hervey Bay Boat Club buys boat to join whale hunt

THE Hervey Bay Boat Club will soon be a major player in the region's whale watching industry after the purchase of a 20m catamaran, which will arrive at Urangan Marina in July.

Hervey Bay Boat Club general manager Ed Gibson said 10 people would be employed on board the catamaran, which was purchased after a six month search for the right boat.

Members of the club had been suggesting the purchase of a vessel to the board of directors for some time, he said.

The catamaran was built in Brisbane by Norman Wright Boat Builders and Designers.

Mr Gibson said it was eight years old and had previously been used for whale watching cruises in Forster, New South Wales.

The boat had work done to it in Port Macquarie and on Monday was on its way to the Gold Coast to be painted.

The catamaran would then make its way from the Gold Coast to Hervey Bay and would arrive in early July.

The vessel would be used for weddings and cruises as well as whale watching, he said.

Prices for whale watching would be in line with industry standards, but there would be special offers for boat club members.

Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell described the purchase as "fabulous" and said he welcomed the news that there would be an enhancement of Hervey Bay's whale watching industry.

"The Fraser Coast continues to be a premier place to view the humpback whales," Cr O'Connell said.

He said the opportunity for the business to employ more local people was also something to celebrate.

"I applaud the Boat Club's investment."
