Mysterious purple jellyfish found at Coolum has died

A PURPLE jellyfish has made waves at Coolum Beach yesterday has died.

ABC online reports the mysterious creature passed away while being analysed overnight.

Meanwhile, photos of the jellyfish going viral online jogged the memory of a Ballina resident who stumbled on a similar animal in July 2008.

The royal-hued ball of blubber was found just above the high tide mark this morning and has been collected by UnderWater World Sea Life Mooloolaba for further examination.

An expert has suggested that it could be a new species of thysantostoma.

Lifeguard Jamie Smith said his colleague, Mick Daly, a lifeguard of 20 years experience, had never seen anything like it.

"It's quite exciting," Mr Smith said.
