Coast man catches deadly eastern brown in rat trap

A SUNSHINE Coast man got more than he bargained for when he caught a deadly eastern brown snake in a rat trap.

Sunshine Coast snake catcher Richie Gilbert said the Yandina Creek man sent him a photo of the snake in the cage.

"Brad follows my page and sent me this photo for identification this afternoon.

"He set the trap this morning to humanely trap a problem rodent. It worked and he caught it but it also provided a free meal to this hungry Eastern Brown Snake which worked its way in to the trap but then couldn't get back out.

"Brad was surprised when I told him it was the 2nd most venomous snake in the world as it seemed pretty docile to him.

"He thought an Eastern Brown Snake would have a cranky temperament and thought it must have been something else.

"Anyway what a successful day for him.

"He was able to eradicate a rodent very efficiently and remove a dangerous snake from his garage all in one go. Nice work Brad!!!"

Richie is having a super busy summer by the look of his Facebook page.

Now for the not so bright category...

A series of photos were posted showing young men handling a snake found at Gardners' Falls near Maleny.

The photos came through with the question "is this a tiger snake? Found at the falls".

"So as many of you might have guessed the snake is a highly venomous Rough-Scaled Snake,'' Richie pointed out earlier this week.

"Either way tiger snake or rough-scaled snake bites can kill so no wild caught venomous snake should ever be handled like this even by an extremely experienced handler.

"On another day this could have ended very badly. To finish on a good note neither the snake or the handler were harmed. Crazy!!

Also goes to show that just because dangerous snakes can bite doesn't mean that they will. I have come across two rough-scaled snakes lately and both were a delight to work with."
