Coast pharmacy staff given a fright with brown snake visit

A SUNSHINE Coast pharmacy had an unusual customer last week when one of the most venomous snakes in the world stopped by.

The Eastern Brown slithered into Warana Pharmacy on January 27 and darted under one of the shelves.

Frightened staff called Sunshine Coast snake catcher Richie Gilbert for help who quickly arrived at the scene.

"Who would have thought you could have so much excitement in a discount drug store," he said.

Mr Gilbert said about 15 people watched him take on the snake and lure it out of its hiding spot.

"From what they explained I thought it sounded like an Eastern Brown," he said.

Despite being the second most venomous snake in the world, Mr Gilbert caught the snake without much fuss.

"I tried to pull it out with my hook but it frightened it and came out in a hurry," he said.

"It's not scary for me. I find it really exciting; I enjoy catching the venomous ones. It's a bit of an adrenaline rush to be honest."
