Coast rugby players in with a shot to face British Lions

A HOST of Coast players have a nervous wait before finding out if they have made a combined Queensland and NSW Country team that will play the mighty British Lions.

The players - Haydn Hirsimaki, Tom Kearney, Jason Welburn, Tom Beattie, Matt George, Matt Gandy, Jay Forrester and James Turvey - were part of the Queensland Country side that drew 24-all against NSW Country in Townsville on Saturday.

The match served as a trial from which the combined side will be selected to meet the Lions at Newcastle on June 11.

A 30-man combined squad will be announced on May 19.

Stingray Tom Beattie, who captained Queensland Country, said: "I think most of the (Coast) boys played well, which is really encouraging.

"It's hard to say (if it will be good enough) to be honest.

"I don't know what the selection criteria is exactly, but I know Super 15 players are available if they're of country origin."

Like flanker Beattie, former Stingray Tom Kearney played the whole match.

The hooker, who now plays for Noosa, said he was in "with a shot".
