Coffs man dies after being stabbed on Gold Coast

A MAN originally from Coffs Harbour has died after being stabbed on the Gold Coast, and his mate has faced court charged with his murder.

Robbie Joseph Charles had just returned home to his Mermaid Beach unit after a casual Saturday night drinking session at the Nobby Beach Surf Club with his girlfriend.

Five minutes later the 32-year-old was found bleeding to death on the front lawn, clutching a deep gash in his stomach.

Police will allege he clashed with housemate Paul Gathercole, who pulled a long carving knife on his friend.

It will be alleged Mr Gathercole then approached Mr Charles' girlfriend, who had been unaware of the incident, and told her: "I've done something really bad."

She ran to the front door and discovered her boyfriend sprawled on the ground covered in blood.

She and horrified neighbours tried to revive him but he died at the scene.

Police were alerted by a chilling 000 call.

A man's voice told the phone operator to send help quickly, adding: "I've stabbed my best mate."

The first police officer to arrive saw a group of people crowded around a bleeding man and demanded to know who had stabbed him.

Court documents allege Gathercole immediately stepped forward and said "I did it, I stabbed him".

He was arrested, charged with murder and remanded in custody after facing Southport Magistrates Court this week.
