Colourful Cosi to premiere during Plunge Festival

MADNESS, love, war and opera.

Set in a Melbourne institution for the mentally ill amid the backdrop of the Vietnam era of the early 1970s, Cosi features a cast of peculiar and colourful characters.

Under the guidance of a young social worker, the inmates prepare to perform Mozart's opera Così fan tutte.

However, none of the actors can sing and nothing goes to plan.

Written by Australian playwright Louis Nowra, the story is a crazy lurch into an extraordinary world but never loses sight of the humour of the situation.

Newly-appointed artistic director for The Pelican Playhouse, Kati Jacobs, says Cosi will be one of the highlights for performing arts at the Playhouse this year and will be held to coincide with the Clarence Valley Plunge Festival in April.

"We have a new committee and a new vision for the Pelican Playhouse ... we want it to be a space for the community all year round," Jacobs said.

Auditions will begin tonight and Jacobs says the production company is hoping to attract some new people. Jacobs says five males and five females are needed to fill out the cast, along with a stage manager, and production crew to assist with lighting, sound and the set.

Directed by Joumana Jeffers, this will be the first time Cosi is performed live in the Clarence Valley.
