Comedian takes a dig at Rockhampton

THE only way Anna Meares could be more of a Queenslander is if she started roughing up people from New South Wales.

Or at least that was the opinion put forth by comedian Wil Anderson on Wednesday night's episode of Gruen Sweat.

The ABC show, which dissects advertising and the way brands are represented in the media, had been focusing on the Olympic Games for the past four weeks and last night analysed the brand strength of Rocky's golden girl Anna Meares for a significant portion of the show.

Anna's brand value was discussed by the experienced panel which suggested she was well placed to be a big brand spokeswoman and said she had a "girl next door" quality.

The show then cut to footage of Anna being interviewed after winning a gold medal in which she stated the thing she was looking forward to the most was "having a rum and a lamington to celebrate".

Predictably sharp with his tongue, Wil Anderson offered some cheeky remarks on Anna and Rockhampton itself.

"A lamington and rum ... that's a wedding proposal in Rockhampton," he said.

"Rockhampton, Lamingtons and Bundy. She couldn't be any more Queensland without punching a New South Welshman in the face."

And while he isn't the first person to bag out Rockhampton on National TV, you could argue that his lines were wittier and better executed than the likes of Akmal Saleh, who has sporadically made jokes about the city.

In Akmal's defence, he had a bit of a bad time here once where he was assaulted by a local who took offence at his production crew filming her kids while they were producing a sketch at the show, but that's simply no excuse for lame jokes.

While there simply isn't space to list them all, here is one of Akmal's "jokes" about Rockhampton.

"I can't do a Rockhampton accent because I'm fully evolved. If you've ever questioned whether we evolved from monkeys, go to Rockhampton."

What do you think? Were Wil Anderson's jokes on Rockhampton funny or do they offend you?
