Cool beer for summer

LESS than six months after his first beer went on tap, Peak Crossing brewer Wade Curtis is set to introduce a new taste at the Yamanto Tavern.

Mr Curtis' 4 Degrees Summer Wheat beer will be officially launched at the Warwick Rd venue from 2pm this Saturday, with members of the beer-loving public able to take their first taste.

It's a fresh taste for a new season for the up-and-coming brewer, whose 4 Degrees Pale Ale has been slurped up by the keg at Yamanto since midway through this year.

"I have been testing the Summer Wheat beer for about a year leading up to this," Mr Curtis said.

"I suppose I launched it during Oktoberfest last year, when I just got a few friends to taste it.

"Ever since then everyone has been asking when I'm going to introduce the wheat beer and I decided now was about the right time."

The new brew uses German wheat yeast to create what its creator describes as a "medium bodied and silky smooth" beer which is perfect for a hot Queensland day.

"Summer Wheat is a well balanced, full-flavoured, handcrafted ale, made with Pilsner, wheat, Vienna and crystal malts, Tettnanger hops and German wheat beer yeast - no preservatives or chemicals," he said.

Yamanto was the first to stock 4 Degrees Pale Ale but not the only one. North Ipswich's The Strand Hotel and New Farm's Bittersuite Cafe/Bar have also served it up in the latter half of this year.

The Harry Brown bottleshop at Yamanto is now stocking conveniently sized five-litre kegs of the Pale Ale.

"The response to the Pale Ale has been fantastic," he said.

"I've even got blokes from the RAAF base asking about it."

All of Mr Curtis's beer recipes are created by the man himself out at Peak Crossing, although the brewing is done at a microbrewery in the bayside suburb of Capalaba.

In the near future, Mr Curtis hopes to come up with a winter stout and an English bitter.

He said he was keenly awaiting Yamanto Tavern's plans to create a dedicated craft beer bar, which could provide further opportunities for local brewers to test new recipes on the drinking public.

The popular tavern already stocks more than 70 types of beer from across the globe, as well as 15 ciders.

There will be complimentary beer samples and food at Saturday's launch.
