Cosy falcon family grows up

ROBYN Hills knew very little about peregrine falcons before a nesting pair took over her balcony garden.

In fact, she initially thought the winged visitors were just "garden variety" birds - until she discovered them eating rainbow lorikeets.

It's the second year the falcons have nested on the balcony of Robyn's 11th floor Caloundra apartment.

The breeders, affectionately named Emily and Frederick, originally cared for four eggs but only two chicks have survived.

They are both healthy and starting to lose their baby fluff as their adult feathers emerge.

Robyn said she became an accidental expert on falcons when they began calling her balcony garden home.

She also found groups of birdwatchers worldwide that have followed the stories she posts about her feathered friends.

The professional photographer snapped this photo of Frederick and his two surviving offspring last week.

"He arrived with lunch, which Emily took to eat for herself, leaving the two chicks to be guarded by dad," Robyn said.

The falcons feel like pets to Robyn and husband Ross Harrison.

"It's fantastic - we don't have to feed them, walk them or look after them."

The chicks are expected to leave the nest in a month.
