It's up to you: What do we name the Toowoomba bypass?

A PROPOSAL to name the Toowoomba bypass after an Aboriginal warrior has been deferred by Toowoomba Regional Council.

A recommendation had been put to council to name the $1.6 billion bypass "Toowoomba Second Range Crossing Multuggerah Way".

But Cr Mike Williams called for the matter be "noted and deferred" pending discussion with Lockyer Valley Regional Council and other interested parties

Cr Carol Taylor argued that, given the crossing will stretch over both the Lockyer Valley and Darling Downs, both councils should be involved.

Cr Williams said while he was not against the proposed name, more community consultation was needed.

The name was advanced by council's Heritage Advisory Committee.

The name will ultimately be decided by the State Government, but Cr Williams said any recommendation by council would "carry some weight".

"I want to make sure we get it right, we've got three years to do it so there's no urgency that we do it today," he said.

A Department of Transport and Main Roads representative said as the crossing was a state-controlled road, its naming would be handled by the department.

It has not considered any specific name.

The department will maintain a database of suggested names and seek approval to consult the wider community before a final recommendation.

It will take into account the relevance and appropriateness of the suggested names and the level of support from government and the community.
