Council wins praise for new water meter reading technology

IT'S the key piece of technology that is set to save ratepayers millions, and it might add a trophy to council's cabinet as well.

If Mackay's guzzle-happy residents had continued with their high water usage, the region would be in need of a new water treatment plant as early as 2020.

Thinking outside of the box, Mackay Regional Council developers and Taggle Systems worked together to create the technology for automatic meter readers, which can take measurements remotely on water usage in real time.

The technology hasn't gone unnoticed, and the council has been listed as a finalist for the Premier's Sustainability Awards.

Water and sewerage portfolio councillor Frank Gilbert described the technology as cost-effective and cutting edge.

Within a few years, residents will be able to track their home water usage on mobile phone apps in real time.

That means you will be able to see if you accidentally left the hose running into the pool when you are away from home.

The technology can also remotely read sewer levels and energy consumption.

"Having access to this information allows us to create improvements and efficiencies within the network," Cr Gilbert said.

Significant savings had already been achieved with the automatic meter reading technology.

"We are currently issuing over 400 potential water leak notices to residents a month.

"In some cases the leaks are quite large, costing around $50 a day," Cr Gilbert said.

"I would like to congratulate the staff who have worked hard and contributed to this project.

"You are all very deserving of this great recognition."
