Election: Councillors need to fight for their communities

PASSION and being a community advocate is what helps make a good councillor.

These wise words came from a wise head in former long-time Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin.

"I think most people put up their hands for all the right reasons," he said.

"That is to advocate on behalf of their community and to ensure that the council provides the economic and social responses to take the community forward.

"Councillors should be passionate about the community they live in. They're there to represent all interests not sectional interests, they should be accessible to the people."

Mr Mulherin, who spent 20 years in the State Government, said councillors had a large responsibility.

"Councils do play a major role, along with other levels of government, in shaping the economic and social wellbeing of the community," he said.

In the Mackay local government election, 37 candidates are running for councillor.

Some of these candidates are running under different tickets too.

"I think they should all commit to ensuring that whatever the outcome, at a mayoral level or a councillor level, that they are committed to working together for a common good," Mr Mulherin said.
