AN ELDERLY Tasmanian couple escaped serious injury when a four-wheel drive and caravan rolled on the Capricorn Hwy on Monday.
Senior Constable Glenn Cox said the man, 79, and his 72-year-old wife were taken to Rockhampton Hospital as a precaution after their Mitsubishi Challenger towing a single-axle van came to grief on an S-bend on the Gogango Range at about 9.30am.
A Main Roads worker reported the accident, which required a lane of the highway to be closed for three-and-a-half hours and caused east-bound traffic to bank up for about 4km. The highway was closed in both directions for 90 minutes as the four-wheel drive and van were loaded on to a tow truck.
Snr Const Cox said investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing.
In a separate incident, two people were taken to Rockhampton Hospital in a serious but stable condition on Monday after their vehicle overturned on the Dawson Hwy.
The man, 50, and woman, 48, had internal injuries and burns due to leaking fuel.
