CH gives rise to the next generation

CQ COMET’S junior ranks have been boosted with the naming of four Central Highlands players who trialled for the under-16 rugby league side late last month in Rockhampton.

Blackwater’s Sheldon Bobbert and Emerald Brothers pivot Adam Kelly, Emerald Brothers’ Dan Russell and Dysart Bulls’ Connor Tilney were selected for the junior Comets which, together with the under-18 squad, will contest the Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga Cups in 2011.

Emerald Brothers under-15 coach Bruce Pratt said Kelly was always one he could see was bound for bigger things in rugby league.

“He’s got a lot of potential, a highly dependable player to have in your side,” Pratt said.

He said Kelly captained this year’s Brothers side and wholeheartedly deserved the Best and Fairest honours bestowed on him for the season.

“A very good all-round player – he’ll be sorely missed.”

Former Blackwater Crushers junior Sheldon Bobbert has already taken the bull by the horns and now boards at St Brendon’s College in Yeppoon.

Bobbert was a standout in this year’s state championship-winning under-14 Capricorn Capras side, named Player of the Carnival.

Previous Comets representatives from the Central Highlands include PJ Marsh, Dave Taylor, Ben Hunt and Tom Hewitt.
