Crash on final lap costs Stoner

AN inexplicable crash on the final lap at Sachsenring in Germany has cost Casey Stoner dearly in the race for this year's MotoGP Championship.

The Aussie looked like the man to beat early in the race, but teammate Dani Pedrosa made his move with 12 laps to go, surging to the front.

Stoner had a big wobble soon after, trying to stay on the Spaniard's wheel, but appeared to be in a position to regain the lead with the finish line almost in sight.

But with Pedrosa setting a record pace, Stoner laid his bike down and slid off the track, Pedrosa going on to beat Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso.

The result put Lorenzo 14 points clear of Pedrosa in the championship standings, with Stoner a further four points back in third place.
