Crew hard at work keeping the Super Hornets flying over Iraq

WHILE Super Hornet crews are flying missions in the air, a 12-man team of tech-savvy technicians are braving the Middle East heat to maintain the aircrafts' wires, radars and electronics.

Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft maintenance personnel are working tirelessly in the extreme heat to support aircraft operations in the region.

Comprising RAAF avionics technicians, aircraft structural technicians and armament technicians, the maintenance crew are integral to the success and safety of the six RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornet aircraft.

The maintenance crew and aircraft form a component of the Air Task Group (ATG) which has started missions in Iraq and is expected to conduct surveillance and reconnaissance, strike and close air support.

About 600 ADF personnel, including a Special Operations Task Group, have deployed to the Middle East Region in support of the Iraqi Security Forces.

Six Super Hornets, an E-7A Wedgetail Early Warning and Control aircraft and a KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft are assigned to the ATG. Australia's efforts are in response to a request for assistance by the Iraqi Government in combating ISIL terrorists.
