Fire crews begin backburning to contain blaze

UPDATE: 1.50PM: FIRE crews have begun back-burning to prevent the spread of a bushfire which started at Takura about 24 hours ago.

Multiple rural fire service crews are at the fire burning near Mungomery Rd and Torbanlea-Pialba Rd.

No homes are threatened at this stage.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have warned the blaze is causing a large smoke hazard.

Nearby residents have been advised to close windows and doors.

Those suffering from a respiratory condition should keep medications close by.

Motorists in the area should drive with caution.

EARLIER: SIX rural fire crews are battling a bushfire near Mungomery Rd at Takura.

Rural Fire Service Queensland area director Tony Johnstone said fire crews were trying to make their way to the blaze but were being hindered by vegetation.

"It's reasonably benign," he said.

The fire, which has been burning for 20 hours, is not threatening any homes.

Mr Johnstone said it was unclear how much vegetation had been burnt due to the location.

He said it was believed at this stage about 300ha had been burnt.

"There is a fair bit of smoke in the area because of the type of vegetation burning," Mr Johnstone said.

The fire broke out about 2pm on Sunday.

Mr Johnstone urged people in the area to take precaution because of the smoke.

Those suffering respiratory condition should keep medications close by and motorists should drive with caution to the conditions.

Those in the area are also advised to close windows and doors.
