Crinum Miss Red Ruby a gem at Beef Week

TERRY Randell has shown cattle for about 15 years, but the Capella cattle producer and fitter had never been nervous until Beef Week 2015, when his senior brahman, Crinum Miss Red Ruby, stepped into the ring to be judged.

Mr Randell's nerves were fast replaced with pride when Crinum Miss Red Ruby was announced both senior champion brahman and grand champion brahman against 219 head of cattle, and went on to take out runner-up in the interbreed category.

"To start with it hadn't really sunk in," Mr Randell said.

"I have shown cattle for about 15 years. I don't think I have ever been nervous until that moment.

"They call out the top five, from fifth to first, so once they got down to the final two and we were still there - the butterflies were in the stomach and the heart was pumping.

"Afterwards it was just lots of pride.

"I have won classes before but never a champion, let alone a grand champion.

"It's been great, we are on top of the world."

Mr Randell said years of preparation went into readying Crinum Miss Red Ruby for Beef Australia 2015, "even to the point where we planned the pregnancy".

"It's been a lot of work that's gone into it, he said.

"Basically she is going to look better with a bigger calf beside her... so about 15 months ago we joined her."

Mr Randell said he and his team of six had a big job readying about 37 head of cattle for Crinum Fitting Service clients, but again, their efforts were rewarded with several cattle taking out grand champion and reserve positions.

"Beef is the biggest show we have in Australia. We will use this to try and push our stud for the next three years," Mr Randell said.

Despite his big week, Mr Randell will not reward himself with a breather just yet, and will begin preparation for the Central Highlands show circuit which will kick off with the Alpha Show on May 19.
