TODAY is Bundaberg-born aviation pioneer Bert Hinkler's birthday.

It's 122 years since his birth.

Celebrations began early yesterday as crowds gathered at the building constructed in his memory, the Hinkler Hall of Aviation in North Bundaberg.

Hinkler Hall of Aviation visitor services and marketing officer Emma Croaker said she was pleased the rain held off for the event yesterday morning.

"It was great to celebrate the life and achievements of Bert Hinkler and show some community pride," she said.

Ms Croaker said a jazz band and the Veteran Car Club was popular with event-goers outside, while inside children were kept busy with face painting and kite making, which they flew in honour of Bert Hinkler, Bundaberg's favourite son.

Ms Croaker said a birthday cake was also made for the event using Hinkler's mother's original recipe.

"It's been a great day and a fantastic morning," she said.

Veteran Car Club members Sid Norman of Jimboomba and Kenneth Wells of Hervey Bay said it was great to have a display at the event.

"We all love our cars; we're fanatics; we love showing them to people," Mr Norman said.
