Cup gets the royal treatment in Rocky
THE race that stops the nation is coming to Central Queensland - well the silverware is at least.
Rockhampton has secured one of only three opportunities in Queensland to host the Melbourne Cup, as part of its Australian and Trans-Tasman 2011 tour.
The cup will also visit the cities of Brisbane and Toowoomba before stopping off in Central Queensland on Friday, August 8.
This year, an exciting mix of Melbourne Cup winners will join the line-up of tour ambassadors including Melbourne Cup winning jockeys Roy Higgins (1965 and 1967), Jim Johnson (1963,1968 and 1969), Midge Didham (1970), John Letts (1972 and 1980), Bob Skelton (1976), Greg Hall (1992) and John Marshall (1999).
They will also be joined by Northern Territorian Wendy Green who drove all the way from Darwin to watch her horse, Rogan Josh, claim the iconic cup in 1999 and Sheila Laxon, the first female trainer to win a Melbourne Cup (Ethereal – 2001), will join the Tour Ambassador team.
Returning home to Flemington on October 24 for a week of celebratory events, the 2011 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour will build anticipation in the lead-up to the 151st running of the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November.
The team at Capricorn Enterprise are planning a number of activities to celebrate the cup’s arrival in Central Queensland including a morning tea, luncheon and cocktail party for the region’s business leaders.
