BUNDABERG'S Sam Daff will captain the Australian under-19 men's team which will play its first match on a tour of Argentina today.

The team left Australia on Sunday and Daff's mother Anne said he was very excited about the tour, especially after being named as skipper.

The 18-year-old, who plays in third base and outfield positions, was selected in the 17-man team from a squad of 30 players after again excelling for Australia Gold at the International Youth Cup in Sydney in July.

The tour will be ideal preparation for the Aussie Colts ahead of the 2012 Junior Men's World Championship, also to be played in Argentina, when Australia will be seeking their fifth consecutive world U-19 men's crown.

Daff took up the sport at the age of 10 and he played all his junior softball in Bundaberg.

He also established himself in senior ranks at a young age and has featured in a number of men's premierships.

A gifted all-rounder who is blessed with outstanding natural ability and has also excelled at many other sports, Daff moved to Brisbane in January to further his career after finishing year 12 at Shalom College last year.

He returned to play a starring role in Brothers United's victory in the Bundaberg men's grand final in April.

Softball is his number one sport and he wants to play the game to the highest level, and with also his tremendous work ethic and character, this tour could be another stepping stone on the way to greatness on the diamond.
