DANIEL Mackenzie wouldn't eat his pet cat, so he doesn't understand why people would want to eat a pig.

The 18-year-old Yeppoon man has decided to take a stand against the meat industry by becoming a vegetarian.

"People distinguish animals as pets and our meat as just something we get at the grocery store," Daniel said.

"People assume farm animals are species devoted to service our needs.

"I just want an understanding and appreciation for what animals go through."

Daniel said his journey to a cruelty-free lifestyle started after he left school and embarked on a gap year, but said he had always held a special place in his heart for animals.

In his youth, Daniel said, he would dream of becoming the next Steve Irwin.

While he was still in the middle of completely eliminating any meat products from his diet, Daniel hoped his decision would encourage others to take a moment to consider what was on their plates.

"It's a long journey; it's almost like breaking an addiction. I have been eating meat since I was a child and it's so hard to break that habit," he said.

"I just want people to appreciate the meat they eat... people don't care anymore, they just see meat and that is it. They don't see an animal that is raised for years in terrible conditions and slaughtered purely for our food. They just ignore it.

"There is always going to be two sides to a story but I want people to open up a bit and take in what I am saying before judging it."
