THE former girlfriend of a convicted paedophile was "blinded by love" when she lied to police about her partner's whereabouts on the day Daniel Morcombe went missing.
The man, known as Person of Interest 5, was in jail for child abuse in 2000 when the woman met him through another prisoner and began writing him letters and visiting him.
At the resumption of an inquest into the Sunshine Coast teen's suspected death in Brisbane Coroners Court this morning, the court heard P5 was released from prison in November 2003 and moved into the woman's home in Goodna, west of Brisbane, which was shared by the woman's children.
On December 7, 2003, the day 13-year-old Daniel went missing from Nambour Connection Road where he was waiting for a bus, P5 left the woman's home for several hours, the court heard.
But when police interviewed the woman about P5's movements that day, she told them he had been at home with her.
Daniel Morcombe inquest resumes in Brisbane
ASSOCIATES of the first man police investigated in relation to the disappearance of Daniel Morcombe will give evidence in Brisbane Coroner’s Court today.
The man, known as P5, is a paedophile who was known to have been near the Sunshine Coast on the day Daniel went missing seven years ago.
Police first had suspicions about P5 two days after 13-year-old Daniel went missing and he is one of the key persons of interest in the teen’s disappearance.
Coroner’s assistant, Peter Johns, told the court this morning that seven associates of P5 would give evidence before the convicted paedophile took to the stand on Tuesday afternoon.
Another person of interest is expected to give evidence on Thursday.
A second week of hearings is expected to be held at Maroochydore Courthouse from April 4.
