Daytrippers chart new course

REEF Star Cruises will introduce three new and improved day trips to Brampton, Scawfell and Lindeman islands at the start of next month.

With a new motor, the company’s MV 2001 vessel is ready to take Mackay residents out during the first weekend of September.

Brampton and Scawfell day trips will resume with a revamped approach, while Lindeman Island is welcomed as a new destination.

Reef Star Cruises co-owner and administration officer Lyn Courtenay said the first day trip on Saturday, September 3 would visit either Brampton or Scawfell.

“For Scawfell, we’ve got to get the tide right for the best snorkelling; it will need to be about a (one) metre (tide),” Ms Courtenay said.

Although the Brampton Island trip doesn’t go to the resort, swimmers will be able to enjoy snorkelling amid coral with an abundance of marine life, such as fish and turtles.

Both trips would cater for all ages; however, passengers with less than agile knees could have trouble accessing the boat’s tender vessels, Ms Courtenay said.

The first day trip to Lindeman Island, on Sunday, September 4, will include a lunch and drinks package, Ms Courtney said.

“It will be a really good trip for people wanting a resort experience and young people and business people will like it too.

“They’re more like pristine, eco-friendly day trips, with a focus on (being) more of a personalised experience,” she said.

Reef Star Cruises has been operating in Mackay since 2005 and Ms Courtenay said they were excited to help boost the region’s tourism industry.

“Our goal for our business in Mackay is not to compete with the Whitsundays, but to simply provide island trips for Mackay people and tourism.

“We are excited; it will start by boosting tourism for local people visiting local spots then a flow-on effect will come and bring travellers to our area,” she said.

The cost of the day trips are yet to be confirmed but will soon be at Reef Star Cruises.
