Demons lay down the law to suspended duo

AFL: Melbourne has blasted its suspended stars Jordan Lewis and Jesse Hogan, saying their off-the-ball incidents against Carlton were "not on".

On their behalf, the Demons have accepted the three-week and two-week penalties offered to them, respectively, by the league.

A Lewis hit left young Blues on-baller Patrick Cripps with a fractured jaw while Hogan struck his opponent Sam Rowe.

"We want to be known as a competitive, contested team and these incidents don't in any way reflect how we want to be viewed," Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said.

Key defender Tom McDonald said their absence would "cost the team pretty badly". The Demons play Geelong this week.

"The group has already stated yesterday that it's not on and it can't happen again," McDonald said.

"There's no one saying that we should line up guys off the ball or anything like that. That's not part of the game what happened on the weekend and that's let us down."
