First emergency Avienus will now gain a start in the 2040m weight-for-age classic.

Descarado blew in betting after failing to appear as planned at Tuesday's Breakfast With The Best trackwork at Moonee Valley, but Waterhouse said that morning that she was 98% sure the last-start winner of the Caulfield Stakes would recover in time for the race.

At the time she described his injury as minor, saying he had "a little bit of heat" in the near hind leg.

However, word came through this morning that the five-year-old gelding was scratched.
