THE sizeable crowd that turned out to celebrate the launch of dirtgirlworld's first full-length CD should really come as no surprise to anyone.
The show, which is produced by Whiporie couple Cate McQuillen and Hewey Eustace, is blazing a trail through TV ratings charts across the globe.
“We are the number one rating show on the ABC for kids aged nought to six, and the number one Australian-produced show for nought-to-12-year-olds,” Cate said.
“We are also doing pretty well in Britain. We are sitting at number four on the children's show stakes in the UK and we have seen other shows rise and fall around us, but we have stayed steady the whole time.”
Being so popular, and eccentric at the best of times, has led to Cate being recognised in some fairly strange and random places.
“I was on The Tube in London, just before my stop, had my hair in pigtails and was carrying a ladybug handbag,” she said.
“This little English boy looked up at me from his pram and asked me in this little prim and proper English accent ‘are you dirtgirl?'
“It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life, but unfortunately I didn't have time to explain to him that I kind of was.”
dirtgirlworld has Cate and Hewey's main project for about three years and they could not be prouder of what the show has achieved.
“Everything that we set out wanting to do with dirtgirl has happened and we have a really great tight-knit team on top of that which makes it all the more fun to produce,” Cate said.
“There is a running joke, Hewey and I only work with people we have known for 20 years. If we haven't known you for that long, we don't trust you.”
While the show has led to plenty of globe trotting, the pair doesn't plan on calling anywhere other than Whiporie home.
“With things like skype and screen share we do the majority of what we need to from home but we do travel around a bit too,” Cate said.
While Cate could not confirm or deny a second series of the hit show, she assured us The Daily Examiner would be the first to know.
“I can say ... the online store was launched last Wednesday and that the DVD of the first series will be released in September,” Cate said with a laugh.
