Fears disabled will end up on the dole

DISABILITY community advocates met in Canberra to discuss the possible effects of the Abbott Government's review of the disability support pension on Friday, fearing the worst.

While Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews has not yet released the welfare payments review, the non-government sector fears a move to take disabled Australians of the pension and on to Newstart.

A statement from the Australian Council of Social Services on Friday said leaders from several groups met to "oppose cuts to income support"; arguing people with a disability were already only just getting by.

Among those calling for a guarantee from the government to maintain, or improve, income support, were the Australian Federation of Disability Organisations, Welfare Rights Centre and Disability Employment Australia.
