Disaster-hit victims waiting on payout

BUNDABERG resident Charlie Chiouitti thought his home would be safe when he raised the floor level to three metres after the 2011 floods.

But, Mr Chiouitti and his wife Dianne are waiting on flood insurance to rebuild their lives after their George St home was hit again by floods in January.

"We had the appraisal six to seven weeks ago and still haven't heard anything," Mr Chiouitti said.

"As far as I can make out - we'll be waiting quite a while."

And they're not alone.

Finemore Caravan Park resident Lynton Merrick, 70, and his 68-year-old wife have been left homeless after losing their mobile home and all their possessions.

To add insult to injury, their insurance company won't cover them.

The couple is now living in Redcliffe, Brisbane, in a homeless shelter.

George St resident Mr Chiouitti said he and his wife had endured some very dark times after the floods.

The couple had nearly finished rebuilding their home from the 2011 floods when they were hit again.

"We raised the floor level to 3m above the ground and still had 50mm through the house," he said.

"We lost everything last time, there wasn't much to lose this time."

He said it had been important to instil some normality in their lives.

"We lashed out and got a new couch and bed; it's nice, it gives my wife a sense that we're going back to normal.

"A lot of people say they're not coming back."

Leeann Barr of George St agrees.

"I miss all the little children next door, their laughter and the life in the street."
