Doctors unable to seven-year-old from asthma attack

A SEVEN-year-old boy died after suffering a serious asthma attack at a caravan park north-west of Ipswich.

Queensland Ambulance Service crews arrived at the Atkinson Dam Caravan Park at 2.30am yesterday to treat a child for an asthma attack.

Paramedics performed CPR on the child at the scene. He was rushed to Ipswich Hospital and was admitted in a critical condition at 3am.

However, doctors were unable to save the youngster's life.

Atkinson Dam is a well-known holiday location, a popular tourist destination for campers and water sport enthusiasts.

It is not known if the boy was from the Ipswich region or was on holiday in the area.

According to Asthma Australia the condition relates to constriction of the airways.

Symptoms of a serious attack include severe breathing difficulties, difficulty speaking, blue lips and quiet wheezing.

Three main factors cause the airways to narrow, including the inflammation of the inside lining of the airways, extra mucus blocking up airways and muscles around the airways squeezing tight.

An asthma attack may develop over a few minutes, or it may take a few hours or even days to happen. An asthma attack may be mild, moderate or severe.

People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs which react to triggers that set off their asthma. This makes it harder for them to breathe.

Asthma affects one in 10 Australians of all ages.

If you or someone else is having a severe attack, you should call an ambulance (dial 000) immediately.

  • Mild asthma symptoms include coughing and shortness of breath
  • The squeezing of the muscles in the throat is called bronchoconstriction
  • Asthma can be controlled with medications
