Dog attack sparks call for jail

A TOOWOOMBA mother whose 12-year-old son was viciously mauled by a dog says Queensland's Criminal Code should be amended so that tougher penalties are handed down to the owners.

Attorney General Paul Lucas has introduced amendments to the state's Criminal Code which could see the owners of dogs that attack people jailed for up to 10 years.

Samantha Cornell's son Wayne suffered serious injuries to his right calf in a dog attack on Grey St in October. He required multiple surgeries as a result of his injuries.

While Wayne's physical scars are slowly healing, Ms Cornell says the mental scars from the attack still affect her son.

"In my eyes if you have a dangerous dog and you haven't done anything to secure it, you should face jail time (if it attacks)," she said.

In August, the Victorian Government introduced laws under which dog owners could be sent to prison if their pets endangered another life, after a pit-bull terrier fatally mauled four-year-old Ayen Chol in Melbourne.

Ms Cornell said she feared Queensland was lagging behind other states on this issue, but welcomed the latest moves towards stricter penalties.

"I have friends and family in other states who have been attacked by dogs and the dogs are put down straight away," she said.

And while the dog that attacked Wayne has since been put down, Ms Cornell says the incident still haunts him.

"Physically he's doing really well, but emotionally it's going to take longer," she said.

"He's still scared of dogs."
