LABOR'S Leanne Donaldson has been confirmed as the new Member for Bundaberg.
Ms Donaldson attended the office of the Electoral Committee Queensland and was handed an official letter confirming her win.
"Now we wait for the government to be sworn in," she said.
Ms Donaldson said she expected there would be a caucus meeting of the Labor members in Brisbane soon.
Her attention now would be on setting up her office in Bundaberg, hiring staff and dealing with the logistics.
Ms Donaldson said she expected Labor to form the new government.
"At this point we have 44 seats, and with (Independent) Peter Wellington we have enough seats to form a government," she said.
Ms Donaldson said she thought a minority government would deliver better democracy for Queensland than a situation where a government had 71 seats more than the Opposition, as was the case with the LNP government.
Former Opposition leader Annastacia Palaszczuk has signalled she would have a 14-member Cabinet team.
But Ms Donaldson said she did not expect to be offered a ministry.
"As a first-term MP I would like to focus on Bundaberg," she said.
"Anything that distracts from that I wouldn't like to do."
Previous member for Bundaberg Jack Dempsey conceded he had lost the seat.
"I certainly congratulate Leanne Donaldson on her win as well as wish her and her team all the best," he said.
"I'd also like to thank all the volunteers and the other candidates."
Mr Dempsey said he had never taken anything for granted about being member for Bundaberg.
He said he planned to continue living in Bundaberg and keep contributing to the community and sporting groups for years ahead.
"Bundaberg is the best community in Queensland," he said.
Mr Dempsey said like any other unemployed person he would have to start looking for a job.
"I'm just like everyone else," he said.
"I've always been a very positive person and I look forward to the challenges ahead."
The Electoral Commission had Ms Donaldson with 51.35% of the vote and Mr Dempsey on 48.65%.
