Donation to keep rescue service in the air
THE Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service has been assured of two more months of rescues, with a $125,000 donation from Xstrata Coal.
Xstrata’s contribution will help fund the rapid deployment of medical or rescue teams to major accidents, incidents and search and rescue operations in remote areas.
Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service executive officer Kay Becker said donations were vital in ensuring the emergency facility stayed in the air and continued to service the community.
“It means part of our survival,” she said.
“The rescue service this year will need to raise $2 million. This donation goes a long way to ensuring we can operate the service. At the end of the day, all the money raised goes towards the operation of the aircraft.”
Kay said Xstrata’s donation would be enough to power the rescue service for about two months.
“The average cost of a rescue is about $10,000 and we are averaging one rescue a day,” she said.
