ADAPT or die - that's the key to winning in business, according to Down to Earth Results director Kerryanne Tawhai and business manager Trevor Tyson, who this month celebrated the opening of their first office and training space.
The resource industry safety and training business is located on Little Bramston St in central Gladstone, seven years after it launched and four years after gaining accreditation as a registered training organisation.
Training courses were held in hired spaces across Gladstone, but are now run from a functional, architect-designed renovated shed.
Originally focused on consulting, the business grew to include drug screening services, safety and management worker training.
Director Kerryanne Tawhai said the move to become an RTO came from necessity, as the 2007-2008 global financial crisis hit their consulting business hard, motivating her to establish a more reliable income base.
Ms Tawhai and Mr Tyson worked in the resources sector before launching their own business, and said understanding the realities of their clients was key.
"(Our clients) want policies to be understood. They want the staff to understand that they are backed by legislation," said Ms Tawhai, whose training staff use realistic examples to provide industry-specific context to courses.
Down to Earth Results graduate Kym Brodie works in a Gladstone medical centre, and said her Certificate 3 training in Frontline Management had been very useful.
"I felt like I had a lot more knowledge and confidence in putting (strategies) together and making the case to my boss," she said.
"It was a lot about confidence for me, and it was really Kerryanne who really made the difference.
"She helped me see it (in a different) way."
The road to having a successful business can be long and tough but the rewards are rich, according to Ms Tawhai.
"Once you start working for yourself, the concept of going back to work for somebody else…I don't know that it can be done," she said.
