Downs rainfall above average as skies deliver
FORGET getting mud on your tyres, try being a jockey thundering down the straight on a soggy Clifford Park racetrack.
Jockey Manabu Kai may have come in sixth from a field of eight horses at the weekend's only race, but there's no denying the smile and the mud on his face - and helmet, silks and horse.
Races were called off for safety reasons, but farmers and residents around the Darling Downs were rejoicing at the continual rainfall.
It's a different story from the same time last year when the region was staring at depressing totals.
Official Bureau of Meteorology rainfall for Toowoomba show the city has soaked up 241.6mm since December 1, more than double the monthly average of 120mm.
At the same time last year, our gauges registered barely 40mm for the month.
It's a similar situation in Warwick which has enjoyed nearly 220mm of rain since the start of December. Last year, it had just more than 12mm.
Further west, Dalby has received just shy of 55mm of rain since December 1 compared to a paltry 8mm last year.
Gatton last year barely registered more than 27mm for December.
This month, farmers have relished the more than 163.2mm that has fallen in the past 29 days.
Bureau forecaster Amber Young said December had been a good month for rainfall this year compared to 2013 which had minimal falls.
"It took a while for the rains to actually develop last year and we didn't get much until January," Ms Young said.
"This December has been quite a good month."
She said the weather pattern had been slow moving across the Downs with low wind speeds forcing it out of the region.
Now as preparations get under way in earnest for New Year's Eve celebrations across the region, the skies look set to deliver patchy hit-and-miss rainfalls.
Heavy rain continued to fall in Toowoomba yesterday afternoon.
