PHOTOS taken by witnesses at the scene of a single-car crash on the Pacific Highway show the amazing escape two people had when their Lexus SUV plummeted 12m between two bridges yesterday.

The incident occurred around 1.30pm, when police allege the male driver fell asleep at the wheel and veered into the safety rail in the centre of the divided highway.

The car travelled along the rail for around 150m before dropping down between two bridges, coming to rest on the roof.

The photo shows the distance of the drop onto the hard concrete, with emergency services accessing the incident by a service road underneath.

Witnesses said that they believe it took nearly an hour for the ambulance to arrive at the scene, which was two kilometres from the Wooli Road turn-off.

It is believed to be one of the few serious incidents on the new highway, however it continues a run over the last two years of incidents with cars falling between bridges on the highway.

In February last year, a truck left the road and went down an embankment at Urunga between two bridges, killing the Queensland driver.

Months later, in June, a Mercedes crashed from the road late at night and fell between two bridges on the highway, injuring three.

In both incidents, again it took emergency services some time to find the incident as it was not immediately visible from the road.

Many people commenting on the incident on social media have expressed concern about mobile phone reception on the Pacific Highway near the latest incident, with reception dropping out in multiple spots towards Pillar Valley and Lavadia.

The driver of the car escaped the crash yesterday with minor injuries, and was able to flag down drivers for help.

The 75yo female passenger was last reported to have been in Lismore Base Hospital with non life-threatening injuries in a serious but stable condition.
