Driver faces repair bill $80,000 for hitting guard rail

AN UNLUCKY Ipswich driver could be facing a substantial repair bill, after his uninsured vehicle hit a guard rail on the Warrego Hwy early Thursday.

Police say the man, aged in his 20s, walked home from the scene of the crash, just after the Bremer River Bridge at Karalee, about 2am.

Officers who followed up on the abandoned vehicle later tracked the owner down at home. The driver allegedly told them he'd left the car and taken the number plates off so that nobody would steal them.

Damage caused to infrastructure like power poles and guard rails is usually covered by comprehensive insurance, however it is understood the driver is not covered.

Initial estimates put the bill at about $80,000.
