Drug death will make sentences harsher for dealers

DRUG dealers will be hit with heavier penalties if someone dies from using their drugs, if Queensland Parliament passes new laws.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie, in parliament last night, proposed the laws that would force courts to take drug deaths into consideration when sentencing dealers and suppliers.

The law was among 29 changes announced yesterday.

The Justice and Other Legislation Amendment Bill also includes changes to increase the maximum penalty for interfering with a corpse to five years, and prohibiting prisoners sending unwanted and inappropriate communication to victims.

Mr Bleijie said a drug death would push the dealer's sentence into the higher end of sentencing options.

"Drug dealers are notorious for putting everything from cement to cattle de-wormer in their drugs," he said.

"They don't care about the pain and suffering they inflict on people, but they might think twice when there are consequences if someone dies because of them."

He said the current laws could not take deaths from drug deals into account in sentencing.

"This ensures justice for victims' families and highlights the seriousness of the offending while ensuring sentencing judges continue to have wide discretion."
