Drugged up mum slept while toddler walked on busy street

WHILE a mother of three slept through drug induced slumber in bed her toddler child had been wandering on the busy Newtown street outside, Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told.

Police called to a report of a small child walking on Taylor St on the morning of April 17, arrived to be told by witnesses that the child came from a house nearby.

When their knocks at the door went unanswered, police entered the house through an unlocked back door and found the child's mother asleep in bed with a man, police prosecutor Leea Trewin told the court.

Police detected the strong smell of burnt cannabis in the room and a search found small amounts of meth and chopped cannabis and scales for weighing the drug in the bedroom, Senior Constable Trewin said.

Holding a small child in her arms in court, the 28-year-old pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs and a drug utensil from that incident as well as to driving with meth in her system on Anzac Ave on January 3, and to driving with ecstasy in her system on Skehan St on June 23.

She is not named so as to protect the identity of the children.

Duty solicitor Phil Stainton told the court his client instructed she had been in a bad place at the time of the offences.

In April the single mother of three had met a man who had drawn her into Toowoomba's drug scene but she had since dragged herself out of that world, he said.

Magistrate Kay Ryan ordered the woman do a drug education course, fined her $700 and disqualified her from driving for two months on the drug driving offences.
