WHILE the rough and tumble of the political world holds little appeal as a future career, Ipswich teen Ebony-Lee Corbyn is passionate about her role as the voice for youth.
The 15-year-old has been selected to take part in the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament.
The St Mary's College Year 11 student is not without some representative experience, as she's a member of the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council.
She said she hopes through parliament to be a good role model for youth.
“I think often the image presented of youth by the media is not always positive,” Ebony-Lee said.
“But it is important for youth to imagine the future they want and work towards it.
“We are the leaders of tomorrow, if we don't stand up and have our say, 20 years from now, the future may not be as we want it to be.”
Ebony-Lee said she was passionate about raising awareness about the obstacles faced by people with disabilities.
She plans on a career in education, with ambitions of one day being appointed a school principal.
Mother Leah said her daughter was a natural leader.
“Even though she says she doesn't want to go into politics, this opportunity opens doors for her,” she said.
“Being a leader doesn't necessarily mean politics, it could mean as a teacher, principal or cleaner of a high school.
“Everyone is a leader in their own way.”
This year, the parliament received a phenomenal response with more than 170 nominations.
However, only 89 members could be chosen, one to represent each state government electorate.
The members of the 2011 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament will be officially sworn in on April 18 during the weekend-long forum in Brisbane.
Over the years, participants have gone on to achieve outstanding milestones in both personal and public life, most notably, the program's first Premier and Opposition Leader, Kate Jones and Aidan McLindon have gone on to become two of Queensland's youngest members of Parliament, currently representing Ashgrove and Beaudesert respectively.
