Egypt court orders retrial for Peter Greste and colleagues

AUSTRALIAN journalist Peter Greste and his Al-Jazeera network colleagues have been granted a retrial by Egypt's Court of Cassation.

During a brief hearing on Thursday, a special prosecutor had urged the country's highest court for a retrial, citing major problems with the original verdict handed down against Greste, and his network colleagues Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy.

Lawyers had asked that the three journalists be let out on bail if a retrial is ordered but they remain in prison and can only reapply for bail once the new trial begins, said Mohamed Wahby, lawyer for Greste and Baher Mohamed.

He expects the new trial to begin in a month.

As the case began early on Thursday, media were prevented from attending a brief sitting at which the prosecutor outlined his concerns, but Negad El Borai, a lawyer for al-Jazeera English's Cairo bureau chief Mohamed Fahmy, said it was significant that the special prosecutor himself had flagged major problems with the original trial.
