Eight armed robberies in seventy-two hours

AT LEAST eight armed robberies across the state were now being investigated by Queensland Police after a spate of incidents in less than 72 hours.

The first attack of the weekend was by a man believed to be holding a gun who demanded cash from a 44-year-old in Redcliffe.

An hour later in Pimpama on the Gold Coast, a pizza delivery driver was held up by a man with a knife who fled with a sum of money.

Before 10am on Saturday a Brisbane unit was robbed, with two women believed to be held at gunpoint, while at Sunnybank a cashier was threatened with a knife.

By midnight, there had been three armed robberies with a knife and one with a suspected firearm.

The last attack of the day - a service station worker threatened with a knife - was followed by a man being charged by police soon after.

A spokesman for Queensland Police said the force did not feel armed robberies were out of hand.

He said offenders could be men and women of any age or background although, "there is a noticeable trend of young males committing armed robberies".

"Armed robbery offences carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment so there is often high risk for little gain."

Each crime would be investigated by region, with its metropolitan north and metropolitan south crews covering all those reported on the weekend.

The QPS also has specialised unites, such as the Serious and Violent Crime Squad.

Police believe such robberies are on a downward slope, although no statistics beyond mid-2011 were available before deadline.

Authorities offered free security audits for businesses and presentations on armed robbery awareness across the state.

Police are investigating each unsolved robbery - anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
